Welcome to Leeds! On behalf of the Leeds Chinese Christian Church (LCCC) Student Fellowship, we are so excited to welcome you to the UK as you start this new chapter at university.
Moving to a new country is a huge step – it brings a mix of excitement, independence, and naturally, a bit of culture shock. Whether you are moving across the world for the first time or returning for a new degree, you don’t have to navigate life in Leeds on your own.
Our student fellowship is a vibrant, welcoming community where international students come together to grow in faith, build lasting friendships, and support one another through the ups and downs of student life. No matter where you are in your spiritual journey, you’ll find a home and family here.
Celebrate your first Mid-Autumn Festival in the UK with us at the Universities Chaplaincy in Leeds!
Connect with fellow students, make new friends, and enjoy an evening filled with games, delicious food, exciting gifts, and fun surprises.

Arriving in a new city can feel overwhelming, but Leeds is one of the most student-friendly cities in the UK. Here are the essential practical steps to help you settle in smoothly during your first few weeks:
Register with a GP (Doctor):
Do this as soon as you arrive don’t wait until you get sick! Register at an NHS GP practice near your accommodation (students near the University of Leeds often use Leeds Student Medical Practice).
Set Up a Bank Account:
App based digital banks like Monzo or Starling can be set up in minutes using your passport and proof of address. If you prefer a traditional high-street bank (e.g., HSBC, Barclays, Santander), you will need to request a Bank Letter or Proof of Enrolment from your university portal.
Get a UK SIM Card:
Giffgaff or VOXI offer flexible monthly SIM plans with no credit check, or you can pick up a pay as you go SIM at any local supermarket.
Buses:
First Bus operates most routes in Leeds. Download the First Bus app to buy discounted student bus passes or track buses in real time. Contactless payments work on all buses.
Trains:
If you plan to explore nearby cities like York, Manchester, or London, apply for a 16–25 Railcard (or Mature Student Railcard) online to get 1/3 off all UK train tickets.
Airport Travel:
If arriving at Manchester Airport, direct trains run straight to Leeds Station in about 1 hour and 20 minutes. If flying into Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA), take the A1 Flyer bus directly to Leeds City Centre.
Everyday Groceries:
Budget supermarkets like Lidl and Aldi offer the best prices for household basics. Supermarkets like Morrisons (Merrion Centre or Kirkstall) and Sainsbury’s are widely available near campus and city areas.
Asian & International Groceries:
Bedding & Essentials:
Skip packing heavy duvets or kitchenware. Head to Primark (city centre) or Home Bargains for affordable household basics.
Student Discounts:
Download UNiDAYS, Student Beans, and TOTUM for discounts on fashion, food, tech, and subscriptions.
Food Savings:
Use Too Good To Go App to buy surplus bakery goods, groceries, and restaurant food across Leeds at discounted prices.
