Leeds Chinese Christian Church is seeking a dedicated and spiritually mature Assistant Pastor to serve the Mandarin-speaking congregation. This full-time role includes preaching, teaching, providing pastoral care, and developing discipleship programmes, while working closely with the pastoral team to support the wider church community.

Key responsibilities include leading services, offering pastoral support to Mandarin-speaking members and students, coordinating outreach activities, and contributing to various church ministries. The role also involves active participation in leadership, administration, and engagement with external organisations.

The ideal candidate will have completed formal theological training, be fluent in Mandarin, and demonstrate a clear calling to church ministry. A servant-hearted attitude, strong teamwork skills, and an understanding of Chinese culture within a Western context are essential.

This is a two-year position (with potential for extension), offering a salary of £28,000–£30,000, a pension contribution, and opportunities for training and development.

Job Description for Assistant Pastor

Job Title: Assistant Pastor (Mandarin congregation)

General

  • The Assistant Pastor will be part of the pastoral team to support Pastors/ in shepherding the congregation, overseeing specific ministries (to be identified), leading services, providing pastoral care (counselling, visitation, weddings/funerals), teaching, discipling members, recruiting volunteers, and handling administrative duties, all while developing his /own spiritual life and supporting the church’s overall vision.
  • The Assistant Pastor will undertake specific duties and tasks as directed and guided by his / her Line Manager (usually a Pastor / an Elder). He / she will be responsible and accountable firstly to the line manager (pastor) and the pastoral team and secondly to the Trustees of the church for the proper execution of his/her duties and responsibilities.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Pastor will include (but not necessarily be limited to) the following:

  • undertake pastoral visitation of the Mandarin speaking congregations or seekers.
  • undertake preaching and teaching duties (frequency to be agreed).
  • provide pastoral care for the Mandarin speaking residents and the Mandarin speaking student fellowships.
  • develop and deliver discipleship training programme and lead small groups.
  • lead and participate in the outreach activities and ministry of the church.
  • play a full and active role in whole church life, including outreach, children’s work and Chinese school.
  • serve on the Leadership Team.
  • include regular time with the pastoral team to plan, pray and prepare.
  • attend pastoral, trustees and sub-committee meetings.
  • co-ordinate evangelistic / social activities.
  • assist in the general administration of the Church.
  • co-ordinate with Christian and non-Christian organisations and represent the Church to other organisations as when is appropriate.

Actual duties and responsibilities will be dependent on the needs of the church and the gifting of the Assistant pastor. Areas of ministry will be agreed with the Line Manager and reviewed formally at the yearly performance review meeting.

Training and development

From time to time the Assistant Pastor may be recommended various training courses by the church. He / she will be expected to avail himself/ herself of such opportunities.

Any areas of improvement / development opportunities will be identified as part of the yearly performance review.

Appraisals

The Assistant Pastor will be expected to work closely with the Line Manager to consult and inform the Line Manager of any issues.

Regular annual review and appraisal of the Assistant Pastor’s development and work will be undertaken by the Line Manager alongside with HR lead if necessary.

Teamwork

LCCC is committed to a team approach to the leadership and care of the Church. Even though the job description describes specific responsibilities and duties for the Assistant Pastor, appointed Assistant Pastor is encouraged to work collaboratively with the rest of the pastoral team under the care and support of the Line Manager.

LCCC Objectives

As part of the pastoral team of LCCC, the Assistant Pastor must commit to the following objectives:

  1. The Spiritual Oversight of the Church.
  2. The building-up of Church members to Christian maturity through caring counselling, preaching, and the teaching of God’s Word.
  3. The building-up of the Church in and through prayer.
  4. The promotion of the aims of the Church as described in the memorandum and articles of association
  5. The general good running of the Church.

Competencies

Here are the essential and desirable competencies of an Assistant Pastor. These will be assessed through the application and interview process.

Essential:

  • Able to demonstrate the evidence of being a disciple of Christ and be a disciple maker.
  • Strong team players
  • Complete formal theological training.
  • Fluent in Mandarin in speaking, listening and writing.
  • Knowledgeable about Chinese culture and have experience of Chinese living in the West.
  • Servant-hearted
  • Hardworking, and understanding of the flexible demands of ministry hours
  • Humble – willing to learn
  • Calling – Someone who has a sense of calling to church-base ministry.

Desirable:

  • Good communication skill
  • Fluent in English and or Cantonese
  • Able to work with volunteers – empowering, delegating, and encouraging
  • Able or have a desire to work across cultures.
  • Understand the values and culture of Leeds Chinese Christian church.

Working requirements & remuneration

  • It is a full-time post with 37.5 hours per week for 2 years. After two years, there is a possibility that the post could be changed to a permanent post.
